Gym Heroes was released on August 14th, 2000, launching the "Gym" era of the Pokémon TCG. Its 132 cards are themed around the Gym Leaders of the Kanto region, with Pokémon owned by Brock, Misty, Erika, Lt. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine — plus a run of Team Rocket cards.
The set is a collector favorite for its character-driven cards and strong artwork, headlined by the holographic Sabrina's Gengar. As a WotC-era release it exists in both 1st Edition and Unlimited printings, which is the key value distinction.
This guide covers how to identify Gym Heroes, the full holo lineup, print variants, and how to value your cards.
How to identify a Gym Heroes card
Gym Heroes Pokémon are owned by Gym Leaders, so names read like "Brock's Rhydon" or "Sabrina's Gengar." The set uses a Gym-era set symbol and card numbers running to /132.
- Pokémon names include a Gym Leader's possessive, e.g. "Misty's Seadra."
- Card numbers read "x/132".
- 1st Edition cards carry the black "Edition 1" stamp.
- The Gym set symbol appears near the card name/artwork.

Gym Heroes print variants
Gym Heroes follows the standard WotC 1st Edition / Unlimited split.
1st Edition
Black "Edition 1" stamp; scarcer and worth a premium, especially for Sabrina's Gengar.
Unlimited
No stamp — the standard, more common printing.
Errors & misprints
Gym Heroes has one famous corrected illustration collectors specifically look for.
Sabrina's Gaze (125/132) — the "middle finger" fix
The original artwork showed Sabrina holding a Master Ball with her middle finger appearing to protrude upward. It was redrawn for later prints to show her throwing a Poké Ball. The English and Japanese illustrations also differ.
English vs Japanese set symbol
Gym Heroes was the first expansion to use a different set symbol for its English and Japanese releases, so the symbol alone can identify the region of a card.
Gym Heroes theme decks
Gym Heroes launched with four single-type Gym Leader theme decks. Sealed copies are collectible and instantly identify the release.
| Deck | Type | Gym Leader |
|---|---|---|
| Brock | Fighting | Brock (Pewter City) |
| Misty | Water | Misty (Cerulean City) |
| Lt. Surge | Lightning | Lt. Surge (Vermilion City) |
| Erika | Grass | Erika (Celadon City) |
The Gym era explained
Gym Heroes and its follow-up, Gym Challenge, are built entirely around Kanto's Gym Leaders. Nearly every Pokémon is "owned" by a character, and the sets include holographic Trainer cards depicting the leaders themselves (Brock, Erika, Lt. Surge, Misty). This character focus makes the Gym sets some of the most thematically distinctive in vintage Pokémon.
Collectors often pursue Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge together, since they share the era, art style, and 1st Edition / Unlimited structure.
Owner's Pokémon and Stadium cards debut here
Gym Heroes introduced the "Owner's Pokémon" mechanic — cards belonging to a named Trainer, with a headshot of that leader and their Gym Badge in the bottom-right corner in place of the usual Pokédex entry. It also introduced the Stadium card, a new Trainer subclass that stays in play and affects the whole board.
These innovations are a quick authentication tell: a genuine Gym Heroes card carries the owner headshot/badge layout, and Stadium cards did not exist in earlier WotC sets.
Grading and condition notes for Gym Heroes
Gym-era holos use the Cosmos foil and are prone to the usual WotC issues: edge whitening, holo scratches, and print lines. Sabrina's Gengar's dark background makes any wear especially visible, so grade heavily influences its value.
Check corners and edges under angled light, scan the foil for hairlines, and confirm centering front and back. 1st Edition holos in PSA/BGS 9–10 are the copies that reach the top of the Gym Heroes market.

What is Gym Heroes worth?
Sabrina's Gengar is the clear value leader, especially in 1st Edition and high grade. The Gym Leader Trainer holos (Brock, Erika, Lt. Surge, Misty) and the Rocket's Pokémon also hold collector interest. Commons and non-holos are modest individually.
As always, edition and grade drive price. A complete Gym Heroes set — particularly 1st Edition — is best valued as a whole.

How many cards are in Gym Heroes?
Gym Heroes has 132 cards, including 19 holographic rares. It was printed in both 1st Edition and Unlimited runs.

Sabrina's Gengar (14/132) is the standout chase holo. In 1st Edition and high grade it leads the set, followed by the Gym Leader Trainer holos and Rocket's Pokémon.
What is the difference between Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge?
They are two halves of the Gym era. Gym Heroes (August 2000) focuses on Brock, Misty, Erika, Lt. Surge, and Sabrina, while Gym Challenge (October 2000) adds Koga, Blaine, and Giovanni — and contains the famous Blaine's Charizard.
Does Gym Heroes have a 1st Edition?
Yes. 1st Edition Gym Heroes cards carry the black "Edition 1" stamp and are scarcer and more valuable than Unlimited copies.
What is the Sabrina's Gaze error?
The original Sabrina's Gaze (125/132) artwork showed Sabrina holding a Master Ball with her middle finger appearing to stick up. Wizards redrew it for later prints to show her throwing a Poké Ball, so an early copy with the original art is a collectible variant.
